While tourism advertisements will always talk about the warmth and hospitality of a country and culture, the ugly side of tourism is barely ever highlighted. In addition to being visitors from another country, tourists are also unsuspecting individuals out in a foreign land they have never visited before – as a result, they are prime targets for local scammers.
There is no dearth of horror stories about travellers who went off on what they thought would be the ideal holiday, only to find themselves swindled and stranded without money in a strange country. The stories are something I can unfortunately relate to. Having been passionate about travelling since I was in my teenages, I have been the victim of a fair share of travel scams, and only age and experience have made me wiser in this regard.
When travelling, people are in a vulnerable state, and it becomes easy for people to trick them into handing over large amounts of money. In order to avoid being scammed, you need to know exactly what sort of travel scams are more common, in addition to knowing what you need to do in order to prevent theft and blend in with the locals so you do not present yourself as a target to the natives. It is essential to take this seriously, as in addition to money, you can also have your identity stolen, or even end up kidnapped for ransom – both incredibly dangerous situations to be in.
