What is Global warming?

The phenomena of continuous rise in the average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere since late 19th century and its anticipated continuation is called global warming. Mean surface temperature of earth has increased by approximately by 0.8 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit) since early 20th century, with about 2/3rd of the increase occurring since 1980.

This rise in temperature is unequivocal, and the geologists and scientists are more than 90 per cent sure that the warming of climate system is primarily caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities. Human activities that are causing global warming include deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. If you want to study this phenomenon in detail, take this free online course titled “Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast”. This course is an introduction to the science of global warming. In this course students will examine changes in climate system from a variety of perspectives and approaches.

Who can take this course?

This is an entry level course that assumes no scientific knowledge and is thus geared toward a general audience. However, high-school-level algebra knowledge will be helpful.

What will you learn in this course?

The participants of this course will gain a multidisciplinary understanding of global warming. In this course you will learn:

- Causes of global warming
- The role of human behavior in climate change
- The basic principles for understanding Earth's climate
- Nature of heat and light
- How greenhouse gases are selective about what light they absorb
- How the temperature structure
sets the stage for the greenhouse effect
- The carbon cycle of the Earth
- How does the carbon cycle stabilizes and destabilizes Earth's climate
- Human impact on Earth's climate
- What preventive and corrective measures can help stop the global warming process
