Referred to as the Eight Wonder of the World by locals and countless tourists, the Batad rice terraces in the Philippines are a sight to behold. Ancient emerald green terraces that are 2,000-year old, these marvels were hand-carved by indigenous people directly into the mountains of Ifugao, and are fed by an irrigation system that these ancient folks built, leading down from the rainforests above. However, owing to the fact that they are around a 19-hour road trip from the capital Manila, and located 1500 metres above sea level, getting to and exploring the Batad rice terraces can be a challenge.
Having fallen in love with the lush green terraces when I first visited them two years ago, I frequently find myself drawn to them, and since I happen to be posted in Manila, I am lucky enough to take a trip to the Batad rice terraces whenever I am in the mood.
