This reading online course examines the stylistic, thematic and ideological difference between different iterations of historically popular tales such as Cinderella, Arabian Nights and Beauty and the Beast. During the course, you will be responsible for completing Q&A sheets, a mid-term and final paper and a final examination, but there are no additional course credit or degree requirements. This course was published in Spring 2008 and is composed of four units dedicated to Cinderella, Arabian Nights, The Pied Piper of Hamelin and Beauty and the Beast.
Since everyone would be familiar with the original stories, the main focus of this course will be on:
- Stylistic
- Rhetorical
- Ideological changes that are grafted into different redactions
The course will be looking at a number of different reinventions of these fairy tales in the form of short stories, poems, novels, picture books, songs, and films. Through class discussion the major developments of each tale will be mapped. Special emphasis will be given to the moral of these stories as almost every fairytale has a moral. These four fairy tales will also be paired with theory blocs to address different critical frameworks. Students will also be looking at several stories that deal with sex, murder, child abuse, rape, and other "adult" topics, thus negating the concept that fairytales are for children.
