Jamie Pope, Instructor of Nutrition at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, has designed a six weeks long online course to help people explore nutrition concepts to evaluate personal food choices but also understand nutrition related content that takes centre stage in mainstream media outlets. It will also cover the nutrition concepts that become a topic of discussion among consumers interested in knowing diet options for optimal health. Some of the nutrition concepts that will be discussed in this free online course include:

- Fundamentals of a healthful eating pattern
- Nutrition labelling
- Dietary supplements
- Fortified and “super” foods
- Plant-based nutrition, and
- Nutrition and fitness

The course will also include an overview of fundamentals of nutrition as they relate to a healthy lifestyle. This course consists of short video lectures and PowerPoint slides, coupled with textbook – Nutrition Now, 7th edition by Judith Brown – and other readings. There are no prerequisites for taking this course, all are welcome; however, some prior knowledge of nutrition fundamentals will be helpful. During this six-week long free online course, you will have the opportunity to:

- Analyze and evaluate your own consumption of food and drinks using a reliable nutrient database.
- Study of a dietary supplement of your choice using information available on some credible websites.
- Examine and understand the concept of energy balance and calorie balance through determination of your personal calorie needs, consumption and utilization.

At the end of the course you will get a signed statement of accomplishment, however, it heavily depends upon your participation in the course.

Jamie Pope has been working as Instructor of Nutrition in the School of Nursing since 2000. Prior to that she worked with Vanderbilt University in the areas of health promotion, heart disease prevention, obesity research and weight management.
