Having come a long way from the simple contraptions they were when they first started out, roller coasters have evolved into elaborate, terrifying monsters that tower high above every other ride in an amusement park, and their steep turns and sheer drops have the ability to make even the most composed passengers scream at the top of their lungs. If you happen to be a thrill seeker, going out in search of the scariest, most exciting rides on the planet is bound to be a mission of yours, but given the countless number of roller coasters in the world, it can be hard to pick and choose.
Whenever a new roller coaster is debuted, it is touted as the biggest, wildest, scariest ride in the world, and this leads to a great deal of hype which can prove confusing, and make even the most insipid roller coaster seem like the most frightening thing on the planet. In order to cut through all the hype, you need to ignore what the creators of the ride say, and trust the word of a roller coaster connoisseur. Luckily, that is exactly what I happen to be.
Having designed a number of successful rides for a variety of amusement parks, I know exactly what makes a roller coaster great, and my knowledge is backed by experience – every time a popular new roller coaster is debuted in the major amusement parks in the world, I make it a point to see, first-hand, exactly what all the hype is about. Sometimes it is worth it, and sometimes it isn’t – I’ve seen enough to know all the tricks in the book, and I can tell when a ride is really special.
