Package Description
Are you interested in exploring public health issues related to obesity from an economist’s perspective?
If your answer is yes then studying Principles of Obesity Economics may help you conduct your research in a better way. You must be wondering what economics has to do with obesity, an entirely health issue. The resources available to you and the prices of goods in open market play a key role in shaping your preferences, even about the food you eat and the weight at which you live. Besides defining the consumption pattern of consumers, economics also motivates government’s role, but only when the markets fail to determine how much they should supply and at what cost.
This course, Principles of Obesity Economics, offered by Dr. Kevin Frick focuses on how consumers’ food and activity choices lead to individuals being different weights. It will also discuss whether or not there is an economic rationale for government to intervene into food and activity markets.
Main objective of this 4-week long course (3-5 credit hours per week) include:
- Helping students understand the concept of consumer sovereignty
- Explaining how consumers make choices between different combinations based on their preferences, relative prices, and time and money constraints
- Finding out economic motivations for government intervention in free markets that bear a direct connection with obesity in children and adults
Dr. Frick is a lecturer at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Department of Health Policy and Management. He did his PhD in Economics and Health Services Organization and Policy from the University of Michigan in 1996, and since then he has been working with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His major work in disease studies is on eye care and obesity, and he has published a number of international cost benefit and cost effective studies and framework papers on these issues.
