Human immunodeficiency virus infection / acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a disease of the human immune system caused by infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This virus, as the name suggests, attacks the immune system of the person. It starts with a brief period of influenza like illness, followed by a prolonged period without symptoms. Over time the virus interferes more and more with the immune system, making the sufferer more likely to get infections that do not usually affect people with active immune system.
Who should take this course?
This course has been primarily designed for medical students. However, this course does not require any prior knowledge of HIV/AIDS, and anyone interested in knowing the causes, symptoms and prevention of this fatal disease can take this course.
What will you learn from this course?
This course emphasize on developments in behavioral and biomedical prevention of HIV/AIDS, experimental vaccines and clinical care issues related with this disease. Populations that are more susceptible to suffering from this disease will also be discussed in the course. It will also discuss future challenges for people infected and affected by the AIDS pandemic.

This free online course has been prepared by Kimberley Sessions Hagen, an assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Science and Health Education at the Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Hagen is also director of the CFAR LINCS Initiative at the Center for AIDS Research at Emory University (CFAR), in Atlanta Georgia and an associate director of the CFAR Developmental Core. Dr. Hagen began her research on AIDS in 1985 when she started volunteering as a community educator at AID Atlanta, and has been since working on promoting AIDS awareness among youth.
