The objective of this seminar for seniors is to study how fiction , both novels and short stories, written by women during the second half of the twentieth century in Argentina , Chile and Uruguay re- creates the contemporary history of the Southern Cone . Several questions move our readings and discussions. For example , how literature constructs subjectivities , how women through the narrative genre tend to correct certain national imaginary , or do how from fiction respond to the story?
Topics to be discussed include the emergence of contemporary female subjectivities and their fictional representations, the creations of the concepts of gender, sex and sexuality in Latin America. Particular attention will be paid on the movements of women who fought for women's suffrage and the military dictatorships of the 1970s and 1980s, which unintentionally contributed to changing roles of women in society. The course will combine lectures with discussions.
This course will be taught by Prof. María Rosa Olivera-Williams, Ph.D.
