Known for its seven star hotels and lavish restaurants, Dubai is considered a foodie’s paradise for the rich, but this is a common misconception. In addition to places that offer gourmet meals, the city also has a number of dining establishments where people on a budget can enjoy delicious and affordable meals.
The mistake that most tourists make is that of falling for one of the many traps laid out for them, which either offer mediocre meals at high prices, or fall under the category of generic fast food which does little to add to a visitor’s experience of the country. These are both grievous errors on a tourist’s part, as Dubai has a lot more to offer.
When I first moved to Dubai, I was understandably apprehensive – Dubai is the most expensive city in the Middle East and I wondered whether I would ever be able to enjoy an affordable night out in a place like this. However, having spent a number of years here, my perceptions have changed completely – not only is there a multitude of cheap restaurants offering quality fare, the food scene in Dubai is incredibly exciting, owing to all the different nationalities that reside within the city.
In my search for affordable, quality meals, I found that the shabby restaurants and street cafes that offer local fare in a rustic, no-frills environment are not only cheaper, but also far more enjoyable than the more established restaurants. After sampling the food on offer at a variety of budget restaurants, I was able to narrow down a list of the best cheap places to eat in Dubai. In my carefully compiled guide, I list tried and tested restaurants and cafes, recommend the best dishes on the menu, and provide you directions for reaching each of these venues.
