Package Description
What is Logic and Proof?
The logic originally generated from the human mind, but it is not always possible to achieve convincing evidence. In other words, it is possible to prove, but not convincing. On the other hand, acting on feelings and neglecting the logical means can be persuasive but not proven. Therefore, to prove, you need to use both logical and proof.
Proof lab – In which student practice proof construction through a dialogue with the tutor and TruthLab – where students practice semantic analysis of arguments and formulae. The core responsibility of the student is to read invalid arguments while completing truth-trees.
Who should take this course?
This course is beneficial especially for mathematics and computer students – who want to implement the science of logic and proof in their work as well as in real life. This is a tutorial-based guide for beginners, so you must have Java and Flash player installed on your computer if you wish to undergo complete training under efficient, qualified and experienced instructors. Flash player is for multimedia lectures while Java is necessary for Truth Lab and Proof Lab.
What are the benefits of the course?
This semester-long course will help you learn:
- The notions of statement and argument
- Logical analysis of informal arguments
- Syntax and semantics of sentential and predicate logic
- Natural deduction-style proofs which will focus on effective and efficient strategic proof construction
- Truth-trees, which will primarily focus on systematic construction of counterexamples
Furthermore, it promises to develop two important skills through Proof and TruthLab exercises:
- Strategic construction of proofs
- The systematic search for counterexamples
Table of contents:
- Statements and Arguments
- Syntax and Symbolization
- Semantics
- Derivations
- Indirect Rules
- Strategies and Derived Rules
- Elementary Met mathematics
