Costs For Setting up an offshore office in India
India is growing fast and so is the interest from companies around the world who want to set up their presence in India. Every major company around the world now has an establishment in India. This research paper is more for the small or mid level technology company who wants to set up in India or for those who want to figure out the cost of setting up an office in India.
Normally first thing people do is to search online, which is what I did also, when I setup my office in Mumbai India. What I found on the Internet was nowhere close to what the reality is on the ground. Cost of employees shown on Wikipedia and other sites is an aggregated average price, which includes lots of factors and in my case was nowhere close to reality.
I finally decided to speak with someone in India, he padded everything from the cost of the computers to what it will cost for system admin. I developed this guide for those who will go through the same thing I have. If you are remotely thinking of setting up your own office in India, this guide will answer most of your questions. I wish I had something like this when I setup my office.
I know as an entrepreneur we all face risks, but by anticipating their causes and knowing what to do in order to minimize their negative consequences in India is extremely important. For me, I was not ready to move to India so risks were a lot higher due to wanting to run it remotely. My goal for setting up an office in Mumbai, was to reduce my costs and have more manpower to grow faster in the USA.
No risks, no gains' is a fundamental principle of a business and that is what I used as a base for starting there. The biggest mistake is not knowing the true picture and trying to rely on others for all the answers. Had I known some real answers myself I would have been able to deal with others better and cost of setting up my office would have been lot less?
This guide is not geared towards the Articles of association or Memorandum of Associations, although I do provide the key differences in India but instead this guide is geared towards what the real costs are.
I decided to open a Branch office in India, which is one of the options by which a foreign company can set up its business operations in India. I obtained a prior permission from Reserve Bank of India (RBI). RBI has conditions associated with foreign companies for branch office:
You have to be careful what activities you get approval for from RBI, you will not be able to expand your activities or undertake any new trading, You will not be able to accept deposits in India
There are some other rules you got to follow and trust me you want to follow them properly. Last thing you want is for someone to come to your office and try to strong arm you to pay under the table payments.
What rules need to be followed will be listed in this doc (there are some unwritten rules, which you will not find on the internet).
I will tell you, what to include in your application, what documents you need and where to submit it and how much it should cost you if you are using a lawyer to do it for you.
Finding the right location is one of the fundamental decisions you would have to make. Just because India has more than Billion people, it doesn’t mean they all are qualified to work for you. I made this mistake, set up in a wrong place and found it very difficult to hire people. For location I cover where to set up based on:
I provide three options; where to set up if you are looking to hire less than 10 people, between 10-50 and over 50.
Location breakdown is also provided based on employee types, system admins, PHP developers or .net developers.
They are further divided by writing skills if you need to hire content writers and oral neutral accent, if you need your employees to make calls abroad.
Salaries of employees
This is the part, which was nowhere close to what was being said online. It took me four years to realize the true costs. For the first year of my office, my salaries were not inline with what the market was paying. I was paying lot more and was not finding the right employees. There was big culture gap not in sense of the Indian culture but more of the startup culture in the USA compared to India. It took me a year to realize this, India was not behind, it was my location that was not right.
This package will show you salaries broken based on years of experience:
What you should be paying for junior, mid level and senior system admin
What you should be paying for junior, mid level and senior PHP developer
What you should be paying for junior, mid level and senior .Net Developer
Where to find and cost of User interface specialists
What you should be paying for junior, mid level and senior Graphic designer
Where and how to find Rockstar developers and what to pay them
Where to find iphone, ipad, android developers and what you should be offering them beside salaries
What kind of manager you should hire for office management and who should be hired for managing the employees (yes there is a difference)
Lots of employees, do on the side jobs, how to make sure you know the signs before hiring them ( I learnt it the hard way)
The salary breakdowns are included not just based on Mumbai but what it will also cost in other hubs in India. I did extensive research, at one point I was thinking of relocating a different city.
The guide actually has lots of other useful information, listing it all is a guide on it’s own. It is basically my notes of thinking of opening an office in India, doing the research while I was still in the USA and then all my notes on what I did, who helped, what I learnt, mistakes I made. The first year, I actually spent six months in Mumbai and met people from Canada, UK, Australia who are running their businesses in Mumbai India and learnt about the challenges they faced. I set up two other offices in India in Bangalore and Hyderabad for close friends. My notes for those two locations are also included.
Before I actually set up my office, I outsourced my work to a company in Mumbai and I provide detail account on what not to do when outsourcing your development to India. What should never be outsources and what is the best way to get results (this is after I didn’t get the results I was looking for). Knowing what I know now, I would do it differently and I’m sure results will be different also.
You will be spending lots of money setting up your office or outsourcing development to India. By buying this package, you will save yourself lots of time and money. I had to think long and hard if I wanted to make this information available to people and what to charge for it. Charging what it costs me to gain this knowledge will put this information out of sight for most people. The price being charged is fair so anyone who is serious about setting up in India can afford it.
Price is only $299 and what it can save you, cannot be imagined.
