Born, raised and schooled in California,
Los Altos schools and then Biola,
Learned Spanish in high school at a Baja camp,
Experiencias que dejaron a permanent stamp,
Left home and moved to downtown L.A.,
The Biola Hotel was the place to stay,
La Mirada, Placentia, La Habra too,
Dishroom, fry cook, window-washing crew,
B.A. and friendships that carried me through,
DooBeeDooBeeDooBeeDoo.
Joined up with a group of Bible Translators,
Literacy workers and facilitators,
Headed to Mexico idealistic and green,
Somehow a romance came on in between,
Head over heels and like-minded in thought,
Charyl and I tied a permanent knot,
Then decided what we wanted to do,
Learn a language in Mexico they call Kickapoo,
We gave it our best without much of a clue,
DooBeeDooBeeDooBeeDoo.
Some successes and failures under our belts,
Our son very ill and burned out to the hilt,
Eagle Pass took us in until we could move,
To Austin to settle into a new groove,
Raised up our family the best that we could,
Hammered some nails and delivered some food,
Worked for the State and for Starbucks too,
Sold antiques to get us through,
Never knew what else to do,
DooBeeDooBeeDooBeeDoo.
Our kids have grown, some moved away,
Sally at Cambridge in the U.K.,
A graphic artist, creative jewel,
Wed to Jamie, a fool for Liverpool.
Jesse graduated from U.T.,
Architecture, a Polycom employee,
Married Sarah his true love true,
Clara, Si, and Jo came due,
Grandkids in Austin, whoopdeedoo!
DooBeeDooBeeDooBeeDoo.
Jon's in west Texas in Marfa town,
Carpentry jobs, some traveling around,
Performance artist, a Rotarian, yet,
A gig here and there on a movie set.
Emily still lives at home with us,
Drives her Rambler or takes the bus,
Doing upholstery to get her through
The artist's life is her venue
Creative stuff out the wazoo!
DooBeeDooBeeDooBeeDoo.
Charyl’s still my better half,
Keeps me honest, makes me laugh,
Decorates houses, hotels, and such,
Has the artist’s golden touch.
Wear a hat, some hair beneath,
Glad for good health and all my teeth,
I love my wife and she loves me too,
We’ve got some living yet to do,
It’s great to be in touch with you!
